In Albania, more than one in ten people live below the poverty line. This makes it difficult for parents to send their children to school, and even harder for orphans. Education and training are crucial to giving these children a chance for a better future.
Islamic Relief organized a summer camp for nearly 1,500 orphans living in remote areas, with limited access to such facilities. It included a wide range of activities and classes, including English, computing, tailoring, embroidery, plumbing, and critical thinking. They also enjoyed recreational sessions, like gym sessions and trips, which they otherwise would not have been able to afford, and learned social skills like teamwork, listening, and communication.
18-year-old Seldjana has a lot of responsibilities – she wakes early to take care of her younger brothers and walk them to school, then goes to a textiles factory where she is training to become a professional tailor. At 4 pm, instead of going home after a long day, she attends school until 8 pm. Unlike other teenagers, her family cannot afford for her to go to school full-time, and she needs to train for a profession.
Seldjana was delighted to take part in the Islamic Relief summer camp, enjoying a break from her usual routine and learning new skills, as well as taking classes in tailoring and embroidery to help develop her future career. She thanked all the Waqf donors ‘from the bottom of her heart for the opportunities she has been given.’
The difference between IWF and other organisations is that IWF will invest your donations and bring a sustainable return year on year and serve people indefinitely.
