Wars and humanitarian crises have a profound impact on the economic stability and food security of millions around the globe. This suffering is especially pronounced in communities already facing poverty, such as Yemen. Livelihood Waqf Share initiatives play a crucial role in supporting vulnerable populations by providing sustainable solutions to enhance economic resilience and food security.

According to a 2024 report from the World Bank, Yemen is expected to become “the poorest” country in the world, with an alarming poverty rate affecting 80% of its population.

While emergency relief helps meet the immediate needs of Empowering Poor Communities, its effects are only temporary. Eventually, people often return to their original situation and again face increasing needs.

To address this issue, we have implemented projects that provide sustainable support for impoverished farmers in Yemen’s Lahj Governorate, which has benefited 40 families.

Empowering the Livelihood of Yemen’s Impoverished Farmers: The  Story of Abdul Wahid

In 2023, 40 families in Lahj benefited from a project funded by the International Waqf Fund and implemented by our parent organisation, Islamic Relief.

Abdul Wahid, a young man in his twenties, is the sole provider for his large family, which includes his parents and six siblings, one of whom has a chronic illness. He and his family rely on a small farm as their only source of income, but this income is often insufficient to meet their growing needs.

This farmer faces a significant challenge due to his reliance on flood irrigation, which strains his budget and damages his crops. He states, “Flood irrigation is extremely costly and negatively impacts my crops, but I have no alternative. If I had a drip irrigation system, I could cultivate a larger quantity of higher-quality crops at a lower cost, which would ultimately increase my income.”

After assessing the farm, the project funded installing a drip irrigation system. This delighted the entire family as they eagerly awaited the results of the new harvest.

Abdul Wahid’s is just one of 40 stories from Yemeni farmers who needed support to improve their income and sustain their families.
