what does Qurbani mean? Qurbani translates to sacrifice and every year, during the last month of the Islamic calendar, the month of Dhul-Hijjah, Muslims around the world are required to offer a sacrifice.
This sacrifice must be either the slaughter of a goat, sheep, cow or camel . The significance of this sacrifice relates back to the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS).
Qurbani is
performed for the sake of Allah and the meat is to be distributed amongst ones family, neighbours and the poor.
Who is it compulsory on to give and receive Qurbani?
Any sane, Muslim adult, who is eligible to pay Zakat is also required to offer a Qurbani.
As meat is to be distributed into 3 equal parts, for family, neighbours and the poor, these are the 3 types of recipients of Qurbani meat.
Which animals are to be sacrificed for a Qurbani?
A goat, sheep, cow, buffalo or camel are the types of Animals that are eligible for Qurbani to be performed on.
However, there are some restrictions, such as, the sheep and goats should be at least one years old in age.
cows and buffalo’s at least two years old in age and camels at least five years in age.
Animals must have been well cared for, free of diseases, must not be blind, be excessively thin, have broken horns from their roots, have more than 1/3 missing from their tail or ear and must be able to walk to the place of slaughter.
When is Qurbani 2021 performed?
Once pilgrims have complete their Hajj, it is required for Qurban to be performed on the 10th, 11th and 12th days of Dhul-Hijjah.
These are the days of Eid-ul-Adha and Qurban signifies the completion of the hajj and is a celebration for Muslims all around the world.
This year, Eid-ul-Adha is likely to fall on Tuesday 20th July 2021.
