Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, a sacred month during which Muslims fast from dawn until sunset.

It is a blessed time filled with forgiveness, mercy, and spiritual renewal.

The Quran was revealed during this holy month to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), making it a significant period for Muslims to strengthen their faith and connection with Allah through prayer, supplication, fasting, and acts of charity.

The Quran

Fasting during Ramadan is obligatory for every sane and capable Muslim. The Quran highlights the importance of fasting in several verses, such as:

“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:183)
This verse emphasizes that fasting was prescribed for previous nations as well, serving as a means to attain piety.

“The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:185)
Here, Allah highlights the virtue of Ramadan as the month in which the Quran was revealed to guide humanity.

“And when My servants ask you concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:186)
This verse conveys Allah’s closeness to His servants, especially during Ramadan, and His readiness to answer their prayers.

Prophetic Teachings

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) narrated many hadiths that underline the virtues of Ramadan and the immense rewards of fasting:

“When Ramadan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained.” (Reported by Bukhari and Muslim)
This hadith highlights the spiritual significance of Ramadan, symbolizing an increase in opportunities for worship and repentance.

“Whoever fasts during Ramadan out of faith and seeking its reward will have their past sins forgiven.” (Reported by Bukhari and Muslim)
This narration emphasizes the importance of sincere intentions and the great mercy of Allah for those who observe fasting faithfully.

When Does Ramadan Begin in 2025?

Based on astronomical calculations and the sighting of the crescent moon, Ramadan in 2025 is expected to begin on March 1st. However, the exact date may vary depending on the country and the sighting of the moon locally.

Special Nights

Some nights hold greater significance than others, most notably:

Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Decree):
Laylat al-Qadr is the night when the Quran was first revealed. Allah mentions its significance in the Quran:
“Indeed, We sent it [the Quran] down during the Night of Decree.” (Surah Al-Qadr, 97:1)
“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.” (Surah Al-Qadr, 97:3)
It is widely believed to occur during the odd-numbered nights of the last ten days of Ramadan, with many scholars favoring the 27th night.

The Last Ten Nights:
The final ten nights are a time of heightened worship, prayer, and seeking forgiveness. Muslims dedicate themselves to nightly prayers and supplications, seeking Allah’s mercy and blessings.

The Spirit of Ramadan

Ramadan is a perfect opportunity for Muslims to renew their faith and strengthen their relationship with Allah through acts of worship and piety. It is also a time for fostering social solidarity and helping those in need. Through zakat (obligatory charity) and voluntary donations, Muslims can make a real difference in the lives of others, embodying the values of compassion and generosity.
