Situation: Pakistan is one of those countries that are worst affected by the climate change. Being 8th most affected in the world, Pakistan contributes even less than 1% to global carbon footprint. But in 2022, one of the worst disasters hit the country with rains breaking record of last 30 years. Exacerbating the situation, 7,000 glaciers melting in the north of Pakistan further contributed immensely to water level rising in dams and rivers resulting in flash floods.
Impact: NDMA has reported 33 million people are affected by the floods in 116 districts with 84 of them declared as calamity hit. The floods have resulted in 1739 deaths and 12867 people have been injured. Further 2,288,481 houses have been damaged. Also more than 13,115 KM roads infrastructures have vanished, 439 Bridges have collapsed, 173 shops have been destructed and 1,164,270 animals also perished. The total loss so far that Pakistan has faced is expected be over $20 billion.
Response: With the returns of Waqf shares, we have helped Pakistan in this emergency. We have provided family tents and temporary learning centers.
The difference between IWF and other organisations is that IWF will invest your donations and bring a sustainable return year on year and serve people indefinitely.
