Niamey is a densely populated city in west Niger. Living conditions are poor, there is a lack of access to basic WASH infrastructure and the area houses many orphan families.
With this project, we aimed to increase the well-being of 1,620 orphans.
Firstly, we provided funds so they can afford new clothes and shoes for Eid. This positively impacted their self-esteem and made them feel more considered in their community.
Secondly, we provided each orphan family with hygiene kits, composed of:
⦁ 1 bucket, containing 25 liters of water
⦁ 1 bucket to store wastewater
⦁ 1 packet of 30 pieces of soap

Additionally, we trained 50 community volunteers on hygiene and Covid-19 prevention, distributed posters to raise Covid-19 awareness and radio broadcasted 30 messages in local languages.

Meet Maimouna

Maimouna is a 55-year-old mother and widow who lives with her five children. Her home contains two rooms and is built of mud, with no electricity and poor hygiene conditions.
Maimouna sells ice and freshwater for a living. On her income alone, she struggles to support the basic needs of her family, such as food, health care, education, and clothing.

Maimouna told us:
