Over the last 5 years, out of 1000 live births in Mali, 54 children died before reaching their first birthday (33 died within the first month of life) One child in ten dies before reaching the age of 5 years (101 deaths per 1000 live births) Infant mortality is lower in urban than in rural areas, with 33% of births taking place at home The maternity rate is estimated at 325 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.

Situation: Mali, one of the world’s poorest nations. Almost half the population live on less than $1.90 a day, whilst around 18 million people heavily rely on agriculture. Sadly, the effects of climate change has led to food shortages for many communities. This has pushed people deeper into poverty and without access to adequate healthcare, mortality rates in Mali have shockingly risen.

Impact: In 2019, the mortality rate for live births was 550 per 100,000. Child mortality rates were 369 per 1000 and neonatal mortality rates were 40 per 1000 (according to WHO). This is due to difficult childbirth conditions in rural areas and lack of access to healthcare.
The Covid19- pandemic has only aggravated the number of stillbirths.

Response: This project provided a new maternity centre in the village of Baga to help improve the delivery of maternal health care services by rebuilding and rehabilitating the old maternity centre. Now, this new centre helps to provide maternal and childbearing services to over 2000 people, including those in surrounding villages. Fully equipped and powered by solar, panels the centre can also operate at night.
